Dear me…

How are you?
I just had to write
It’s been a longtime,
It’s been most of your life

When you started out
You were all make believe
Now you just say
You were young and naive

When you got to school
They said, ‘do this ,look that’
When you think back you felt
Ugly and fat

When you hit teens
It was all boys and diets
You were down on yourself
You withdrew and went quiet

You’ve been through a lot
I know – I was there
Trying to alter
Your face and your hair

You scratched in deep marks
‘Cause that was ‘just you’
And the experts, they said
You’re not just what you do

Dear me, have things changed?
You’re older now; true
But when will you actually
Start being you

Who are you looking for
Who will you find
When you’re only about
Keeping up with the times

Touring the world or
Relationship chasing
Adopting new fads
New airs and new graces

Dear me, just stop.

And start to be you
The irony is you’re avoiding the truth
Life is but once
It’s not all that long
And what will they write
About you when you’re gone

….dear me?
